On 4 and 5 April, the cyber competition Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge 2024 took place. Four teams from ETH Zurich participated in the challenge and one of them, team CyBerg, won first place. Big congratulations!

Over the final weekend of January, two teams representing ETH Zurich took part in the ICPC Southwestern Europe Regional Contest (SWERC) held in Paris. Team dETHroners seized the SWERC title, clinching the gold medal with an impressive 11 problems solved. Congratulations!

Professor Ana Klimovic has been chosen for a VMware Early Career Faculty Award which identifies recently-​appointed faculty whose research interests and accomplishments seem poised to have significant impact within the industry and academia. Congratulations!

For his thesis “A Programming Language Approach to Smart Contract Privacy”, former doctoral student Dr Samuel Steffen received the prestigious ACM SIGSAC Doctoral Dissertation Runner-Up Award. Congratulations!

The RACKlette team, consisting of six Computer Science Bachelor students, won the Computer Cluster Competition (SCC) at the International Supercomputing Conference in Denver, Colorado. Since the first edition of the SCC back in 2007, this is the first time that a European team has won the competition. Congratulations!

Niao He, Ana Klimovic, Rasmus Kyng and Fanny Yang are among the recipients of a SNSF Starting Grant for their respective research projects. This grant is currently awarded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Congratulations!

The German Bundesverband Hochschulkommunikation has awarded its 2023 Digital Award to four outstanding digital communications projects. Among the winners is ETH Zurich (2nd place) with the game "Morph Tales", developed by D-INFK members.

Gaspard Zoss and Yifan Wang have been awarded the 2023 Eurographics PhD Award for the high quality and impact of their doctoral dissertations. They received their price at the Annual Eurographics Conference that took place at the beginning of May.

Professor Gustavo Alonso has received the prestigious EuroSys Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding technical contributions to the field of computer systems. Congratulations!

Ralf Jung’s work on the Iris logic framework is awarded the 2023 Alonzo Church Award for Outstanding Contributions to Logic and Computation. Congratulations!

Professor Bernhard Schölkopf from the Institute for Machine Learning is recognised with the 2022 ACM - AAAI Allen Newell Award for his widely used research in machine learning. Congratulations!

David Cock, senior researcher in ETH Zurich’s System’s Group, is one of the co-recipients of the prestigious ACM Software System Award. Congratulations!

Professor Torsten Hoefler, Head of the Institute for High Performance Computing Systems, is the inaugural recipient of the Jack Dongarra Early Career Award. Big congratulations!

ETH Professor Martin Vechev and his team won first place in phase 3: red teaming in global AI Privacy Prize Challenge. The competition inspired innovators on both sides of the Atlantic to build solutions that enable collaborative development of artificial intelligence (AI) models, while keeping sensitive information private.

Professors Adrian Perrig and Olga Sorkine-Hornung have been elected members of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW). They both were elected for their considerable track record in technical sciences. Congratulations!

In the latest QS World University Rankings by subject, Computer Science is ranked 9th. Overall, ETH ranks among the top ten in 16 disciplines.

Srdjan Capkun and Zhendong Su, professors at the Department of Computer Science, have been named IEEE Fellows. The prestigious grade of IEEE Fellow is conferred upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest.

A team of three ETH computer science Master’s students won a silver medal at the World Finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and became European Champions – the best placement by an ETH team in the history of the contest.

After winning the Golden Owl in 2020, Dr. Ghislain Fourny receives the Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching at this year's ETH day on 19 November. Congratulations!

Three teams of researchers from the Department of Computer Science have received awards at the ACM Computer and Communications Security Conference (CCS), one of the top conferences in the field of security.

The European Girls' Olympiad in Informatics took place for the second time from October 16-23. This time, the competition brought together 155 talented female students from over 40 countries in Turkey. The four Swiss participants were awarded silver and bronze medals. 

For his exceptional work, Marcin Copik, doctoral student at the Scalable Parallel Computing Laboratory, has been awarded an ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowship. Congratulations!

IEEE Computer Society honours Professor Torsten Hoefler with the Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award for his pioneering contributions to large-​scale parallel processing systems and supercomputers. The ideas and software professor Hoefler and his group developed are used by tens of thousands of scientists to power large-​scale scientific simulations and artificial intelligence systems.

Professor Zhendong Su and his doctoral student Shaohua Li have been awarded a 2022 Meta Security Research Award for their project proposal on “Solidifying sanitizer implementations via automated testing”. Congratulations!

Together with colleagues from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Theodoros Rekatsinas has been awarded a four-year programme from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the joint project “LAKE”. Congratulations!

Manuela Fischer, postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, was awarded the prestigious Chorafas Prize for the best doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich. Congratulations!

Clara Meister, doctoral student at Rycolab at the Department of Computer Science, was awarded the prestigious Google PhD Fellowship. The Fellowship programme was created to recognise outstanding students doing innovative research in areas relevant to computer science.

Dr. Maciej Besta, who is a member of the Scalable Parallel Computing Lab at the Department of Computer Science, has won the 2022 SIGHPC Doctoral Dissertation Award. Congratulations!

Riccardo De Santi, Master’s student at the Department of Computer Science, has won the Outstanding Paper Award at the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML 2022). Congratulations!

Professor Zhendong Su, along with his group members Dominik Winterer and Chengyu Zhang, has received the prestigious Amazon Research Award for their work in the field of automated reasoning.

At the Symposium on Geometry Processing, Professor Olga Sorkine-Hornung received a test-of-time award for a paper she wrote fifteen years ago. Congratulations!

Manuela Fischer, former doctoral student at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, receives the 2022 ACM Principles of Distributed Computing Doctoral Dissertation Award. Congratulations!  

At the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy 2022, professor Adrian Perrig and his colleagues received a test-of-time award for their first publication on the SCION network technology. Perrig heads the Network Security Group at the Department of Computer Science and is the inventor of SCION. Congratulations!

ETH gave out its annual Spark Award on April 27. With their new system that enables safer digital currency transactions at a national scale, Srdjan Capkun, Kari Kostiainen and Karl Wüst from our department made it into the top five. Congratulations!

Kristina Hostáková, postdoc in the Foundations of Cryptography Group at the Department of Computer Science was given the CAST/GI Promotion Award IT-Sicherheit. The award honours doctoral theses that promote advancements in IT security and make IT applications more secure.

The Max Planck Society honours Alexis Block, a former doctoral student at the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, with the prestigious Otto Hahn Medal for her fundamental and innovative research in the field of human-robot interaction.

Professor Zhendong Su is awarded the prestigious ICSE Most Influential Paper Award for the paper "On the Naturalness of Software". The paper emerged from a collaboration with former students and colleagues at UC Davis.

Professor Otmar Hilliges from the Institute for Intelligent Interactive Systems and Professor Martin Vechev from the Institute for Programming Languages and Systems receive ERC Consolidator Grants for their respective research projects. The mid-career award is given to outstanding researchers with highly promising scientific track records. Congratulations!

Theodoros Theodoridis, doctoral student in the Advanced Software Technologies Lab, has won two awards at the ASPLOS 2022 conference.

Professor Julia Vogt from the Institute for Machine Learning and Professor Ce Zhang from the Institute for Computing Platforms receive ERC Starting Grants for their respective research projects. Researchers whose projects are selected in the ERC’s highly competitive procedure receive not only international recognition, but also substantial funding for their project.

Manuela Fischer, Maciej Besta and Francesco Locatello, three doctoral students from the Department of Computer Science, have won the ETH Medal for their outstanding doctoral theses.

Professor Otmar Hilliges and his collaborators have received lasting impact honours for two papers published ten years ago at the conferences IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR) and ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (UIST) respectively.

Marcin Copik, doctoral student at the Scalable Parallel Computing Laboratory at the Department of Computer Science, was awarded the Microsoft Research PhD Fellowship. The program aims to empower the next generation of exceptional computing research talent. 

ETH and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems are intensifying their partnership to promote doctoral candidates and research: ETH professors Otmar Hilliges, Thomas Hofmann, Andreas Krause and Klaas P. Prüssmann are new Max Planck fellows.

Professor Ana Klimovic from the Systems Group was granted the prestigious Facebook Research Award. The award aims to support innovative solutions to the challenges that still remain in the data management community.

The Swiss business magazine Bilanz has published its annual list of Digital Shapers, the 100 top contributors to digitalisation in Switzerland. It includes Professor Adrian Perrig as well a number of alumni and spin-offs from the Department of Computer Science.

Two research teams from ETH Zurich, led by Gunnar Rätsch and Karsten Borgwardt, won the 2021 SIB Bioinformatics Graduate Paper Award. Their paper is about predicting circulatory failure in the intensive care with the aid of machine learning. Congratulations!

Gagandeep Singh, former doctoral student at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, received the 2021 ACM SIGPLAN Dissertation Award for his work on building safe and robust AI systems. Congratulations!

For the first time, ETH Zürich’s CTF team flagbot qualified for the prestigious DEFCON CTF competition. Our joint participation with EPFL students was a big success. Not only did we make it into the top 10, we also finished as the best European team.

Highschool student Joël Huber is the second Swiss student ever to win gold at the International Olympiad in Informatics. The Center for Computer Science Education (ABZ) of ETH Zurich helped train the Swiss delegation. (German)

The ETH CTF (Capture the Flag) team “flagbot”, led by computer science student and VIS committee chairman Leonardo Galli, has qualified for the CTF finals in Las Vegas in August at DEFCON, the world’s largest hacker convention.

Nezihe Merve Gürel, a doctoral student from the Institute for Computing Platforms at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, has been named one of the 2021 Google Scholarship recipients. Congratulations!

Prof. David Basin, Dr. Jorge Toro Pozo and Dr. Ralf Sasse from the Information Security Group receive the IEEE Best Practical Paper Award for their publication "The EMV Standard: Break, Fix, Verify".

Team Argonauts, composed of ETH students and trained by the student organisation Cyber Group, took first place at the Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge in Geneva.

Master's student and Excellence Scholar Václav Volhejn was awarded first runner-up at the TCS CodeVita coding competition, winning against more than 350'000 other students.

David Basin, professor at the Department of Computer Science, has been named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to formal methods for information security.

Michael Rabinovich and Dimitar K. Dimitrov, two doctoral students from the Department of Computer Science, have won the ETH Medal for their outstanding doctoral theses.

The International Open Benchmark Council committee has recognized Professor Torsten Hoefler with the BenchCouncil Rising Star Award for his valuable work in the field of benchmark testing, metrics and optimization.

For the paper “The Multikernel: A New OS Architecture for Scalable Multicore Systems”, Professor Timothy Roscoe from the Systems Group at the Department of Computer Science was awarded the prestigious SIGOPS Hall of Fame Award.

A team from the Centre for Computer Science Education (ABZ) under the direction of Professor Juraj Hromkovic has received the prestigious Worddidac Award for the teaching material "Einfach Informatik 5/6" ("Simply Computer Science 5/6"). The book promotes computer science skills and creative thinking.

At the Digital Days of digitalswitzerland, the first NextGen Heroes were honoured with the Digital Economy Award. David Yenicelik, Master's student at the Department of Computer Science, is one of the two prize winners.

Felix Berkenkamp, a former doctoral student in the Learning & Adaptive Systems Group, has received the annual ELLIS PhD Award for his doctoral thesis.

Dr. Zuzana Trubini and Dr. Martin Hirt receive the prestigious TCC Test-of-Time Award for their 2008 paper titled "Perfectly-Secure MPC with Linear Communication Complexity".
