2022 Chorafas Prize for Manuela Fischer
Manuela Fischer, postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the Department of Computer Science, was awarded the prestigious Chorafas Prize for the best doctoral thesis at ETH Zurich. Congratulations!
For her thesis on "Local Algorithms for Classic Graph Problems", Manuela Fischer received the 2022 Chorafas Prize. The Chorafas Prize is initiated by the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation and recognises outstanding work of doctoral students in engineering sciences, medicine and natural sciences at partner universities in Europe, North America and Asia.
In her dissertation, Manuela presents her findings on the design of distributed algorithms for numerous graph problems in models such as LOCAL and CONGESTED-CLIQUE. Further, she introduces new techniques for distributed algorithm design, as well as for the analysis of randomised algorithms for graph problems. Manuela did her doctorate at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, advised by Professor Mohsen Ghaffari, where her research was supported by a Google PhD Fellowship. As of January 2022, she is working as a lecturer at the Department of Computer Science and deepening her research into local algorithms for graph problems.
Every year, only two theses receive this award across all departments and programmes of ETH Zurich (selected from among those that received the ETH Medal). In the 23-year history of the award, this is the third time that the award goes to the Department of Computer Science.
