Václav Volhejn, a Master's student at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich, was awarded second place, also called "1st runner-up", at the coding competition TCS CodeVita, organised by the Indian IT giant Tata Consulting Services. The ninth season of the competition attracted record numbers of participants: more than 350'000 students from 98 countries had signed up. On Friday, April 16, the best 25 of them competed in the finals.

"I was so nervous leading up to the results announcement", recalls Volhejn. "My goal was to make it into the top three, and I'm relieved that I did!" He had participated in the contest before, but had never made it to the finals. "A great thing about programming contests is that you get to travel for the finals", he says. "I had hoped to go to India, but the pandemic sadly prevented that."

The Czech student started his Master's studies in computer science at ETH Zurich last year and is a recipient of the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) by the ETH Foundation, reserved for students who are in the top 2-3 percent of their year.
