The International Open Benchmark Council committee has recognized Professor Torsten Hoefler with the BenchCouncil Rising Star Award for his valuable work in the field of benchmark testing, metrics and optimization.

Professor Hoefler from the Institute for High Performance Computing Systems has been awarded the prestigious BenchCouncil Rising Star Award. The award honours his long-term achievement and contribution to the field of benchmark testing, metrics and optimization, which are one of the foundations of research and practice in various disciplines represented by computers.

One specific highlight of Torsten Hoefler's work is a paper that he published in 2015, titled " Scientific Benchmarking of Parallel Computing Systems" and which had a long-term impact in this specific field. In this paper, Hoefler proposes statistically sound analysis and reporting techniques as well as simple guidelines for experimental design in parallel computing to improve the standards of reporting research results and initiate a discussion in the HPC field. A wide adoption of these basic rules will both improve the quality of the research in this field and also the extent to which it can serve as a sound basis for future work, says Hoefler.

The Rising Star Award was announced on October 31 at the joint main forum of the Smart Computing Conference and the Chip Conference during the 2020 Qingdao Innovation Festival in China. Prof. Hoefler was officially honoured at a virtual award presentation on November 15, 2020.
