Golden Owl for Emo Welzl
Professor Emo Welzl has been awarded the Golden Owl 2023, a distinction that honours lecturers for excellent teaching. Congratulations!
Emo Welzl, Full Professor of Computer Science at the Institute of Theoretical Computer Science of the ETH Zurich, is among the recipients of the Golden Owl 2023. The Golden Owl, an initiative by ETH Zurich's students' association VSETH, is given to lecturers who have provided exceptional teaching and encourages them to continue in this way. Each year, one lecturer from each department is selected to receive this special mark of recognition.
Professor Emo Welzl has been teaching at ETH Zurich since 1996. His research interests are in foundations of computer science, mainly combinatorial algorithms, in particular computational geometry and applications, combinatorial models for optimization, analysis of geometric structures, randomized methods, and discrete geometry. Throughout his career, Welzl received numerous prizes and honours, for example the Max Planck-Prize and the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Prize, just to name a few. He is also a member of various prestigious scientific societies, such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Academia Europaea and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences.
