Bernhard Schölkopf receives ACM - AAAI Allen Newell Award
Professor Bernhard Schölkopf from the Institute for Machine Learning is recognised with the 2022 ACM - AAAI Allen Newell Award for his widely used research in machine learning. Congratulations!
Bernhard Schölkopf, Professor at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich and Director of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, has received the prestigious 2022 ACM - AAAI Allen Newell Award. He is recognised for his widely used research in machine learning, advancing both mathematical foundations and a broad range of applications in science and industry.
Schölkopf has played a crucial role in shaping the field of kernel methods and causality with his groundbreaking contributions. His work on kernel PCA and kernel embeddings has significantly enhanced statistical methodology, specifically in the areas of dimensionality reduction and hypothesis testing. Furthermore, Schölkopf, along with his team, has made noteworthy contributions to various fields of applied machine learning, such as astronomy, biology, computer vision, robotics, neuroscience, and cognitive science. Schölkopf's pioneering work in causal machine learning has laid the groundwork for a fresh perspective on learning causal relationships from data, which has far-reaching implications for all scientific domains.

Bernhard Schölkopf is the Director of the Department of Empirical Inference at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Tübingen, Germany, and is also a Professor at ETH Zurich, where he conducts research and teaches at the Institute for Machine Learning. His research interests include machine learning and inference from empirical data. Schölkopf has been recognised for key contributions to theory and algorithms for kernel machines used to classify data and estimate relationships among variables, as well as causal inference.
Schölkopf was honored with The Royal Society Milner Award in 2014, which recognises exceptional accomplishments in computer science by a European scholar and also received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2018, Germany's most prestigious research award. Additionally, in 2017, he was appointed as an ACM Fellow for his contributions to the advancement and application of machine learning.
About the ACM - AAAI Allen Newell Award
The ACM/AAAI Allen Newell Award recognises individuals for their significant career contributions that span across computer science or link computer science with other fields. Along with individual donations, this award is accompanied by a prize of $10,000 funded by the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and ACM.
