Additional information
Research area
Javier's research interests include causal reasoning, representation learning, and privacy in machine learning. Through his research, he aims to provide trustworthy insights into high-stakes decision-making, particularly within biomedical applications.
Javier Abad is a Doctoral Fellow at the ETH AI Center, supervised by Prof. Fanny Yang (Statistical Machine Learning group), Prof. Julia Vogt (Medical Data Science group), and Prof. Bjoern Menze (Department of Quantitative Biomedicine, University of Zurich ). Javier holds a BSc in Telecommunications Engineering with a specialization in Signal Processing and a BSc in Business Administration, both from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV). He also received an MPhil in Machine Learning and Machine Intelligence from the University of Cambridge.
His first research experience included a research assistantship in UPV on developing machine learning models for breast cancer diagnoses. Next, during his stay at Cambridge, Javier researched interpretability methods for causal inference in the context of precision medicine, supervised by Prof. Mihaela van der Schaar. Javier also worked at the Machine Learning Group in Cambridge, leading a project on conformal prediction overseen by Dr. Adrian Weller and Dr. Giovanni Cherubin. Before joining ETH, he was a Research Scientist at Featurespace, researching and implementing deep learning models for fighting financial crime.
