IEEE TCHPC Early Career Researchers Award for Maciej Besta
The IEEE Computer Society TCHPC Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High Performance Computing recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions in high-performance computing within five years of receiving their doctorate. Dr Maciej Besta from ETH Zurich is one of those honoured people. Congratulations!
Each year, the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS) selects up to three individuals who have made exceptional and influential contributions to the field of high-performance computing and honours them with the Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High Performance Computing. Dr Maciej Besta, who is part of the Scalable Parallel Computing Lab (SPCL) at the Department of Computer Science, is one of the three award recipients. At SPCL, Maciej Besta focuses on research on sparse graph computations and large language models. He is particularly interested in irregular computations in any type of settings and workloads, such as graph-enhanced language models, graph neural networks, graph databases, graph streaming, sparse models, or classical graph algorithms.
IEEE-CS will present the awards at SC24, taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, from November 17 to 22, 2024.
Dr Maciej Besta has published over 50 papers in top conferences and journals, receiving multiple best paper awards and nominations at ACM/IEEE Supercomputing in 2013, 2014, 2019 (for two papers), 2022, and 2023 (for two papers), as well as at ACM HPDC in 2015 and 2016, and ACM Research Highlights in 2018, among others.
Besta has earned several prestigious honors, including Best Student of Poland (2012), the first Google Fellowship in Parallel Computing (2013), the ACM/IEEE-CS HPC Fellowship (2015), and the IEEE TCSC Award for Excellence in Scalable Computing Early Career (2023). His doctoral dissertation was awarded the ETH Medal for outstanding doctoral research (2021), a SPEC Honorable Mention (2022), and distinguished dissertation awards from IEEE TCSC (2021) and ACM SIGHPC (2022).
