For the second time, computer science students at ETH Zurich are organizing VIScon – a unique combination of a symposium and a hackathon. The three-day event, packed with talks, workshops and coding, enables students to get a deeper insight into computer science, engineering and entrepreneurship.

“VIScon offers ETH students the opportunity to experience everyday working life,” says Gregor Wegberg, who was formerly active in VIS and is a speaker at this year’s Symposium. The speakers at VIScon include industry representatives and researchers. Abhimanyu Patel, another former ETH computer science student and last year's Head of Symposium, started working at the IT consulting company ipt this year and will hold a talk on how companies deal with millennials’ demands. During networking lunches students can chat with the speakers in a relaxed atmosphere. Further, the 48-hour hackathon gives students a chance to practice their skills, craft new ideas and to develop an app to make students' lives better – "byte by byte".

VIScon seems to be a win-win event in so many ways. Those in charge of VIScon also benefit by gaining valuable experience in event management. "You learn a lot about communication. We’re dealing with almost 40 companies and we have to interact with all of them,” OC President Max Schrimpf says. He further emphasises that one learns how to deal with external requirements and stakeholders.

The Department of Computer Science is very proud of their students and their initiative and wishes everybody a memorable VIScon 2019!
