Professor Angelika Steger leads the Combinatorial Structures and Algorithms group. Her research areas include algorithms, combinatorics, randomisation and probabilistic methods as well as combinatorial models for optimisation.

Prof. Angelika Steger

Professor Steger, what are your interests and hobbies outside of science?
I enjoy hiking.

What is your favourite insporational quote?
"I have made this letter so long only because I did not have the leisure to make it shorter." — Blaise Pascal

What would you do if you had one year of paid leave?
Do what I love most: try to get some idea on how our brains 'compute'.

If you weren't a scientist, what would you be?
Probably not a happy person.

What is your guiding philosophy for running your lab and doing research?
To have impact, quality and not quantity matters.

Name a fun fact about your field or your research.
In combinatorics, problems can be inherently difficult even they look trivial.

What does diversity in computer science mean to you and why is it important?
For me, diversity in science (not just CS) is a constant source of inspiration.

What's the impact of your research on the society?
Only history will tell: my aim is to have an impact in the long run.
