The Department of Computer Science welcomes its new Assistant Professors, Prof. Olga Sorkine und Prof. Andreas Krause. They will start teaching at the department in the Spring Semester of 2011. (German)

After two years of having been stored ad interim at ETH, the giant calculator ERMETH – developed at ETH in the 50ies – began its trip to Berne on 29 November where it will be on permanent loan to the Museum of Communication. Approximately 150 members of the Department of Computer Science and CS students came to get a closer look at ERMETH.

Every year, the Fritz Kutter fund awards outstanding industry-​related theses in computer science. In 2010, René Müller, a former doctoral student with Prof. Alonso, received this sought-​after prize. Currently based at the IBM Research Center in Almaden, René came over to Zurich on November 22 to take home his "trophy" – a good opportunity to talk to him about his passion for research, visions and how he would make Zurich a better place for IT.

Rector Prof. Heidi Wunderli-Allenspach invited all members and friends of ETH Zurich to participate in the 155th ETH Day on November 20. Traditionally, ETH uses this opportunity to celebrate the people who helped it become one of the leading universities in the world. In this spirit, Charles H. Bennett and Gilles Brassard received honorary doctorates last Saturday. Laudator Prof. Friedemann Mattern acknowledged their achievements in the area of quantum computer science. (German)

Master's student Simona Constantinescu and her seven fellow students won the first prize in the category Information Processing at the iGEM 2010 with their project “E. lemming”.
