Machine learning method could revolutionise multi-messenger astronomy

Observing binary neutron star mergers is high on the wish list of astronomers. In a study published in the scientific journal Nature, an interdisciplinary team of researchers including ETH Zurich postdoc Maximilian Dax and Professor Bernhard Schölkopf presents a novel machine learning method to analyse gravitational waves emitted from neutron star collisions almost instantaneously – even before the merger is fully observed.

DisneyResearch|Studios, a close partner of ETH Zurich and led by Computer Science Professor Markus Gross, has been selected to receive a Scientific and Technical Award from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for its Machine Learning Denoiser technology. The Academy recognises technologies that have proven to add significant value to the process of making motion pictures.

One weekend, 80 creative minds, and 23 games – the Global Game Jam 2025 transformed the venerable StuZ in ETH Zurich's main computer science building into a melting pot of game ideas. From 24 to 26 January 2025, the ETH Game Technology Center hosted the Zurich edition of this global event and offered students, game developers and hobbyists a stage to explore their creative limits.
