Turning life into a profession
Computer scientist Torsten Hoefler is the winner of this year’s Latsis Prize awarded by ETH Zurich. His Scalable Parallel Computing Laboratory is one of the few laboratories to combine theory and application in the field of high-performance computing. Although mentors warned him against uniting these two aspects, it is precisely by doing so that he has now achieved his success.

Create your own 3D model
3D shapes are an inherent part of our culture. Almost everyone knows animated movies such as “Shrek”, “Toy Story” or “Despicable Me”. But who has ever created such an animated 3D figure? Only a very limited number of people have ever tried their luck at 3D geometric modeling. In her ERC Starting Grant project “Intelligent Shape Modeling”, Prof. Olga Sorkine intends to simplify the processes of 3D modeling, thus making it accessible to the general public.
Advancing the art and science of computing and information technology
Every year, ACM recognizes some of its members for their contribution to computing. In 2012, two D-INFK Professors have been elected to the grade of Fellow: Prof. Gustavo Alonso for contributions to distributed systems, middleware, and data management, Prof. Markus Gross for contributions to computer graphics and animation.
