Exciting AI projects from the Department of Computer Science are featured in the latest Globe issue

Titled “Everything AI? The rise of human-machine partnerships”, the latest edition of ETH Zurich's magazine Globe presents several AI research projects from the Department of Computer Science. Many of our professors, researchers and centres are portrayed in the current issue, in which the importance and complexity of the associated ethical responsibility become obvious.

From medicine and disaster management to news production in the media, Globe examines the interaction between humans and machines in the wide variety of fields where AI is already present and considers the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Boeva

Mapping the depths of the genome: Valentina Boeva, Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the Department of Computer Science uses modern methods of machine learning to analyse the whole-genome sequence of a tumour. One focus of her research is on epigenetic changes in tumour cells. These are temporary and reversible changes in the genome; they are not permanent genetic alterations. Read more

Giving computers a voice: The Media Technology Center is teaching computers to speak Swiss German and searching for applications that could lend a hand with day-​to-day editorial work. Professor Ryan Cotterell brings together linguistics, automated language processing and artificial intelligence to change the one-​solution approach that modern translation programs typically offer. Everything AI? Artificial intelligence is revolutionising research and changing our daily lives. ETH Zurich promotes innovation and confidence in this emerging technology. This includes the extension of its partnership with the Max Planck Society, the launch of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and the opening of the ETH AI Center. Professors Thomas Hofmann and Andreas Krause are at the forefront of these efforts. Read more
