Internet at the speed of light

Interactive applications like web browsing, gaming, and AR and VR, are more engaging when network latencies are small. Unfortunately, the Internet is many times slower than it could be. Thus, Debopam Bhattacherjee and Prof. Singla’s work explores the design of a c-speed Internet that operates at the physical limit: the speed of light.

Their approach augments the Internet’s fiber with free-space wireless connectivity, combining both networks’ strengths: high bandwidth over fiber and low latency over wireless. We estimate that such networks across Europe and the US would achieve mean latencies within 5% of c-speed, while being economically viable.
