Theodoros Rekatsinas, Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Computer Science, left ETH Zurich at the end of January to take up a position with Apple. We wish him all the best!

Ce Zhang, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Computer Science. Zhang conducts research at the interface between data science and systems, and works at the cutting edge of developments in IT following the transition to cloud-based systems. 

After two years as Department Head, Professor Timothy Roscoe is going back to business as usual – teaching and research. He reflects on his time running the department and the importance of having a positive outlook.

Together with colleagues from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Professor Theodoros Rekatsinas has been awarded a four-year programme from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the joint project “LAKE”. Congratulations!

The future quantum computers should be capable of super-​fast and reliable computation. Researchers at the DS3Lab conduct an early exploration for reliable quantum machine learning.

Dr. David Cock, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Computing Platforms, received the ACM SIGOPS 2019 Hall of Fame award for a paper he co-authored ten years ago.

Congratulations to Ioana Giurgiu, Oriana Riva, Dejan Juric, Ivan Krivulev, and Gustavo Alonso who have been awarded the Test-of-Time Award of the ACM/IFIP/Usenix International Middleware Conference 2019 for their paper “Calling the Cloud: Enabling mobile phones as interfaces to cloud applications", published in Middleware 2009.

Senior scientist Dr. Barbara Solenthaler received one of the first grants from the Botnar Research Centre for Child Health. Her project aims to optimise the surgical treatment of cleft lip and palate with the use of machine learning algorithms, smartphone images and 3D printing.

ETH computer scientists Debopam Bhattacherjee and Prof. Ankit Singla are proposing a novel network design that could double the network capacity of “Internet from space” systems.

Professor Timothy Roscoe was invited to speak at the Unix 50 event at Nokia Bell Labs, celebrating 50 years of Unix operating systems and providing an outlook to the future of computing.

Vasiliki Kalavri didn’t know anything about computer science before she encountered it at university. Today, she is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. Dr. Kalavri and her team are building Strymon, a next-generation stream processing system that is faster, more flexible and more autonomous than existing systems.

Dr. Ana Klimovic’s research areas include computer architecture, cloud computing, computer systems and data centre architecture.

Timothy Roscoe is a Full Professor in the Systems Group at the Department of Computer Science at ETH Zurich. He has led the effort to build Enzian, a uniquely flexible research computer that will allow researchers to study many different areas of computer science without requiring specialised hardware, thus bringing academic studies and the realities of industry closer together.

Viruses, crime, and many other problems spread through networks. ETH researchers have now developed a new method of protecting them cost-effectively.

Professor Timothy Roscoe leads the Network and Operating Systems group within the Systems Group. His research areas include operating systems, distributed systems, networking and enterprise computing.

Assistant professor Ankit Singla leads the Network Design and Architecture Lab within the Systems Group. His research areas include networks, data centers, internet architecture and network design.

Assistant Professor Ce Zhang leads the Data Sciences, Data Systems, and Data Services (DS3) lab. His research areas include data science and data management, machine learning and database systems.

Ce Zhang joined the Department of Computer Science as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor on September 1st of 2016. He joins us from his post-​doctoral research at Stanford University, California, USA. His research interests are in the areas of databases, data processing, machine learning and data science. He links conventional areas of databases and information retrieval with new methods of machine learning.

Ankit Singla joined the Department of Computer Science as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor at the beginning of 2016. He joins us fresh from his doctoral research at the University of Illinois, Urbana-​Champaign, USA. His research interests are in the areas of computer networks, including internet architecture and data center networks, with particular regard to the efficiency of networking infrastructures and protocols.

Human-​computer interaction, machine vision, performance and energy scalability, mobile computing, and data center optimization – these are some of the most significant challenges that computer science will have to face in the years to come. In the Microsoft Research - Swiss Joint Research Center, a collaborative research engagement between Microsoft Research, EPFL and ETH Zurich, science and industry try to tackle these challenges together. Professor Gustavo Alonso elaborates.

'Reaching for the stars' has become a down-​to-earth endeavor: data-​driven, information-​rich and fast-​paced results in information technology are at the very heart of astronomy. Data-​based science is becoming recognized as a stand-​alone research area - ranking with theory and experimentation. Astroinformatics is a new discipline emerging at the intersection of astronomy/astrophysics, applied computer science and advanced statistics.

ETH Zurich and EPFL are jointly entering into a new research partnership with Microsoft Research. Over five years, Microsoft Research will provide five million Swiss francs of funding to support IT research projects. Microsoft researchers will also work closely with the scientists at the two universities.

Every year, ACM recognizes some of its members for their contribution to computing. In 2012, two D-INFK Professors have been elected to the grade of Fellow: Prof. Gustavo Alonso for contributions to distributed systems, middleware, and data management, Prof. Markus Gross for contributions to computer graphics and animation.

Every year, the Fritz Kutter fund awards outstanding industry-​related theses in computer science. In 2010, René Müller, a former doctoral student with Prof. Alonso, received this sought-​after prize. Currently based at the IBM Research Center in Almaden, René came over to Zurich on November 22 to take home his "trophy" – a good opportunity to talk to him about his passion for research, visions and how he would make Zurich a better place for IT.

Prof. Gustavo Alonso has recently received the VLDB 10 Year Best Paper Award. This award has been established for the author(s) whose paper appeared in the VLDB conference 10 years ago and has had the most impact on database research since then. In the interview, Prof. Alonso talks on the significance of this award and the impact of his remarkable research achievements on society, as well as business and industry.
