David Dao recently defended his doctoral thesis, conducted in the ETH Systems Group under the supervision of Professors Ce Zhang and Gustavo Alonso. His childhood fascination for Albert Einstein led him all the way from Munich to ETH Zurich. During his doctorate, he discovered a lot about himself, what he is passionate about and the value of thinking outside the box.

Professor Ce Zhang was Associate Professor in the Data Sciences, Data Systems, & Data Services Lab (DS3Lab). He left ETH Zurich at the end of last month to take a position as an associate professor at the University of Chicago, USA. We wish him all the best!

Ce Zhang, currently Tenure Track Assistant Professor at ETH Zurich, has been promoted to Associate Professor of Computer Science. Zhang conducts research at the interface between data science and systems, and works at the cutting edge of developments in IT following the transition to cloud-based systems. 

David Dao, a doctoral student in the DS3Lab at the Department of Computer Science, visited the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference and explains what computer science can do to help.

The future quantum computers should be capable of super-​fast and reliable computation. Researchers at the DS3Lab conduct an early exploration for reliable quantum machine learning.

How does one find what one is looking for among the numerous publications and research areas of ETH Zurich? To answer this question, ETH staff teamed up with students from the Master’s in Data Science.

Initially, he wanted to be a particle physicist. Today, he helps protect the rainforest using artificial intelligence and blockchain. David Dao, a doctoral student at the DS3Lab at the Department of Computer Science, travelled to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Madrid in December to present his research. In an interview, he explains how artificial intelligence can help the climate, but how it also poses risks.

For his interdisciplinary research on how to evacuate large cities, postdoctoral researcher Leonel Aguilar won a prize for "Innovators under 35 in Latin America".

Doctoral student David Dao develops intelligent algorithms that use satellite and drone images of rainforests to predict deforestation. Today, he will be presenting his research at the climate conference in Madrid.

Senior scientist Dr. Barbara Solenthaler received one of the first grants from the Botnar Research Centre for Child Health. Her project aims to optimise the surgical treatment of cleft lip and palate with the use of machine learning algorithms, smartphone images and 3D printing.

So called dark data are documents that machines cannot read. In cooperation with Zurich Insurance, Professor Ce Zhang brings light into the dark. 

Assistant Professor Ce Zhang leads the Data Sciences, Data Systems, and Data Services (DS3) lab. His research areas include data science and data management, machine learning and database systems.

Ce Zhang joined the Department of Computer Science as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor on September 1st of 2016. He joins us from his post-​doctoral research at Stanford University, California, USA. His research interests are in the areas of databases, data processing, machine learning and data science. He links conventional areas of databases and information retrieval with new methods of machine learning.
