Juraj Hromkovic has been Professor of Information Technology at ETH Zurich for the past 20 years. During this time, he has been a leading advocate of teaching computer science in schools. He’s now giving his farewell lecture.

Last year, it was decided that computer science would become a core subject in Swiss baccalaureate schools from the 2024/25 school year onwards. In this conversation, three generations of professors who have committed themselves to this cause look at the past and future of the school subject of computer science.

April Yi Wang, currently a doctoral student at the University of Michigan, is appointed Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Educational Technology. Her research focuses on the investigation and development of modern digital technologies, using AI and other tools to facilitate cooperation between data scientists.

A team of three ETH computer science Master’s students won a silver medal at the World Finals of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and became European Champions – the best placement by an ETH team in the history of the contest.

Under the direction of D-INFK Professor Juraj Hromkovic, the ABZ trained children for the robotics competition entitled "First Lego League". Two teams made it to the finals, one of which was received by ETH Rector Sarah Springman for a visit.

Gifted children are often not challenged enough at school. As a result, their motivation and love of learning suffer. The Centre for Gifted Education at the Department of Computer Science aims to counteract this with extracurricular courses.

A team from the Centre for Computer Science Education (ABZ) under the direction of Professor Juraj Hromkovic has received the prestigious Worddidac Award for the teaching material "Einfach Informatik 5/6" ("Simply Computer Science 5/6"). The book promotes computer science skills and creative thinking.
