Connecting theoretical knowledge with practical applications

The VIScon Symposium, organised by students from the Association of Computer Science Students at ETH Zurich (VIS), is back for its sixth year on Saturday, 21 October. Learn more about the yearly conference from Alisa, who is on the VIScon organisational committee.

Can you explain the VIScon Symposium to someone who has never been there?

The VIScon Symposium is a student-led, one-day event that brings together individuals eager to explore Computer Science at the intersection of academia and industry. Attendees can access a full day of inspiring talks, engaging workshops, captivating escape rooms, an interactive exhibition, and much more. Plus, the admission fee of CHF 5 includes breakfast, lunch, an apéro in the evening, and some goodies to take home.

At the heart of the VIScon Symposium lies a series of thought-provoking talks. Are these talks similar to university lectures?

No, the talks are not like traditional lectures, and it should not feel like an extra day at university. The talks aim to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge you learn at university and the "real world" application. Because many of the speakers are alumni and alumnae, they can offer a direct link between their studies and their career paths afterwards. With four talks running in parallel throughout the day, VIScon attendees have the freedom to choose the topics that resonate most with their interests. There is no need to pre-register for the individual talks.

Aside from the talk, what other events does VIScon offer?

The VIScon Symposium offers a variety of engaging hands-on events for participants. There will be a range of workshops where VIScon participants can improve their skills or discover new interests. There is something for everyone at these workshops, from cyber security to machine learning, and from software engineering to entrepreneurship. Please note that registration for workshops is separate from the symposium registration due to limited availability. Moreover, prepare to be amazed by the interactive exhibition in the main hall from noon until the end of the day. Visitors will have the opportunity to try the latest video games, interact with robots, and explore other hands-on activities. The exhibition provides a perfect chance to take a break from the talks or workshops and recharge.

You have participated in four out of the previous five VIScon Symposia. Could you share your personal experience?

Attending VIScon has broadened my horizon, as it showcases the Computer Science field's interdisciplinary nature. Additionally, I have formed new friendships with like-minded people. The symposium also provided a unique opportunity for me to acquire valuable knowledge and practical experience in Computer Science. Hopefully, this year's attendees will also have an enjoyable weekend full of learning and fun.
