Short news: 2016 and older

At the end of March 2015, computer science pioneer Friedrich L. Bauer (1924-2015), Professor at TU Munchen, passed away. The mathematician worked on the foundations of computer science such as programming languages, compilers, cryptography and software engineering. F. L. Bauer was a friend of ETH and a personal friend of Heinz Rutishauser, the first computer science professor of ETH Zurich. (German)

A leading light in discrete and algorithmic geometry, Professor Jiří Matoušek passed away on March 9, 2015, a day before his 52nd birthday.

"University" and "brand" are terms which can definitely be compatible. Harvard University, Oxford University and other world-​renowned names are notable examples. Strategic thinking has become imperative in the differentiation process of defining and refining a university’s position and profile. To design, live and communicate this process means to build a university brand.

The Scalable Parallel Computing Lab at ETH Zurich will become a member of Intel(R) Parallel Computing Center community. The goal is to tackle the challenges of growing parallelism in high performance computing.

At this year's ETH Day, Prof. Noga Alon and Prof. Eric A. Brewer received the honorary doctorate of ETH Zurich. (German)

Otmar Hilliges is a recognized scientist in the field of human-computer interaction. Hilliges primarily researches techniques in the area of "augmented reality". With his research field, he continues the successful tradition of ETH Zurich in harnessing computer power in a modern way. (German)

Professor Torsten Hoefler conducts research in the field of high-performance computing on highly parallel systems. He strengthens the Department of Computer Science and ETH Zurich in particular also in the important focus area "scientific computing and simulation". (German)

The Centre for University Development (CHE) once again confirms the computer science department's top position in the ranking of the almost 80 evaluated German-speaking universities. D-INFK at ETH Zurich performs well above average in eleven of the twelve categories. (German)

Prof. Martin Vechev, an outstanding young researcher in the area of software engineering, will commence teaching at the Department of Computer Science in the Spring Semester 2012 as a new Assistant Profesor. (German)
