External Master's theses
Students from the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK) may write their Master's thesis at another university or research institution in Switzerland or abroad.
The thesis is still considered an ETH thesis, and a main supervisor from the relevant faculty at ETH is required. Before making any concrete arrangements regarding an external Master’s thesis, please find a main supervisor at ETH who is willing to agree to an external thesis under his or her main supervision. Such external theses are also subject to the department's guidelines, for example with regard to the registration in myStudies, duration, and grading.
The credits earned for the Master's thesis do not count as mobility credits. A previously completed semester mobility does not exclude an external Master's thesis.

The Student Exchange Office provides general information on student research projects outside ETH Zurich and awards scholarships for certain projects. See also the information sheet on agreements in connection with student research projects completed at another university (in German).
SEMP Projects & Traineeships (SEMP SMT)
D-INFK approves applications for this programme for external Master’s theses only. Please complete the “Learning Agreement for Traineeships/Projects” and ask the supervising ETH professor to sign it before submitting your application in Mobility-Online. After submission, the application is reviewed by the department and the Student Exchange Office. The Student Exchange Office decides whether a scholarship can be awarded.
