"If I don't want to be disturbed, I put a sign on my door"
Can you give a brief description of your home office work routine?
I don't have a routine yet, but I am trying to set up as many things as possible. I'm teaching 5 courses together with Felix Friedrich, Malte Schwerhoff and Torsten Hoefler. The courses are rather big, with 100 to 500 students. Switching so many courses to remote teaching is a large initial effort. Luckily, everyone in the team is very active and provides helpful input and also suggests clever solutions to open questions. Big shout-out to the teaching assistants as well! Besides teaching, many other activities needed to be set-up and reorganised, be it the Code Expert development, study coordination, and last but not least: my family with two kids in home-school and both partners working. So, after this week, I hope that a routine will slowly establish. The technology is ready and working, and the students seem to enjoy the interactive remote-sessions a lot!
Do you have any specific advice that makes working from home easier?
Set up a proper work-environment by having a proper screen, desk, and chair – we need to spend a lot of time in home office now, therefore an ergonomic arrangement is extremely important. ETH allows us to take home all the material needed to set up an ergonomic workplace (e.g. screen or office chair). Also: define clear rules and follow a schedule, especially if children are involved. For instance, put a sign up if you're not allowed to be disturbed. In return, spend enough time with your kids – they also suffer a lot from this situation.
